What Is Coaching?

From time-to-time friends and family ask me, ‘what is coaching?’ so here is a post to help you to understand what it’s all about

Coaching, mentoring, consulting and counselling all involve entering into a confidential professional relationship, being listened to and asked effective questions to support you to make progress.

However, mentoring, consulting and counselling differ from coaching in a number of ways:

  • A consultant might work with an individual or group looking to diagnose problems they are facing and recommend solutions to their current challenges.
  • A mentor might work with someone seeking direction from someone with knowledge in the same area and is likely to share their own experience and offer advice to the client.
  • A counsellor might work with individuals experiencing significant levels of distress which is impacting on their everyday life.
  • Coaches usually work with people who have a desire and readiness to make changes in their lives. Coaching uses purposeful and insightful questions to empower you to take action.
